Student caught with gun on middle school campus

HOUSTON

Officials say school leaders received a tip, then detained the student and found the loaded gun in a backpack. The weapon has been confiscated.

HISD issued the following statement: "Please know that we take these situations very seriously. The safety of our students and staff at Cullen Middle School is always our absolute top priority."

The student was arrested and charged with possession of a prohibited weapon in a school zone. Administrators will take disciplinary actions as outlined in the HISD Code of Conduct.

School officials say it doesn't appear that the student had any intention of hurting anyone; they think he was just trying to show off the gun to classmates.

This isn't the first time a student has brought a loaded gun to the middle school three weeks ago. HISD officials don't think the incidents are related.

HISD has already notified parents,

"I don't understand how these kids are getting a hold of these guns, where they getting them from? It's not even safe to come to school. I'm here today for the second time, the second time? What if he shot somebody?" concerned parent Sabrina Hines said.

No one was injured in either incident.
