Teen struck by tree toppled by strong winds in north Harris County

HOUSTON

The wind was strong enough to push over a large tree at the Big Tex Nursery near Cypresswood and I-45, and a 17-year-old standing nearby couldn't get out of the way in time.

That teen was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by helicopter. A manager says he suffered major back injuries, and we do not have an update on his condition.

Nursery employees say the trees were unsteady, possibly due to weather, when some of them started falling suddenly. Workers jumped away, but one tree hit the 17-year-old, who was on his first day on the job. Workers say that tree weighs more than 100 pounds.

"We are experiencing high winds today so that could be a contributing factor," Spring Fire Department District Chief Shannon Strick

An investigation is ongoing.
