It wasn't the birthday cake, but what was inside the cake.
When they cut into it there was a disgusting find, a rat.
The store-bought cake came from a grocery store in Long Island.
Neil Gold's Uncle Joe wanted one thing for his 96th birthday party, his favorite German apple ring cake and it had to come from his favorite store.
"He's had all their cake. He loves their cake. It has to be King Kullen," Gold said.
Uncle Joe took one bite of the cake Thursday night and complained.
"He said, 'It doesn't taste right,'" Gold said.
Neil says he cut the cake again and noticed what looked like a line of black mold.
"We saw it was coming from the bottom. We flipped it over and seemed to be a rat's tail," Gold said.
This is what Neil says he found baked in the cake, a gray and grim looking tail.
But how did it get there? Family attorney Ed Yule has a theory.
"I personally am of the opinion that this cake was tampered with," Yule said.
Yule plans to turn the cake over to state officials for testing.
"What's King Kullen have to say about this?" Yule said.
Well King Kullen says it's had fresh bakeries inside its stores for more than 30 years and never has a rodent been found in any of their cakes.
King Kullen said in a statement, "Product has been removed from the bakery and the premises has undergone a thorough inspection. There are no known safety or rodent issues in this bakery."
Thankfully, Neil says his uncle isn't sick in the hospital, but he's sick over what happened.
