After a 23-month pregnancy, Shanti, a 23-year-old Asian elephant delivered a healthy 385-pound male calf early Friday morning at the zoo's McNair Asian Elephant habitat.
"The elephant keepers have named the calf Duncan," said Houston Zoo Large Mammal Curator Daryl Hoffman. "They like the way it sounds."
Duncan was born at around 2:10am and was standing on his own within the hour. By 9am, he was nursing.
Shanti, Duncan and dad, Thai, are all doing fine.
On Thursday, we told you about Masai, who was born on Tuesday.
