The Gulfport Police Department says Fred liked to have too much fun.
While the Belgian Malinois could sniff out bombs and drugs, police officials say he was easily distracted. For example, while searching a building, Fred might spot a soda can on the floor and start playing with it.
The Sun-Herald reports the city paid between $12,000 and $13,000 for Fred two years ago. That included his training.
Department officials tell the newspaper they've tried sending the canine back to school, but it didn't take.
The city council declared Fred "surplus property," allowing the department to sell Fred back to the original training firm.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
