Shoppers fill stores for last-minute Christmas shopping

HOUSTON

Whether they love it or hate it, the stores are bursting with shoppers checking off the last few items on their list.

"My wife is off shopping for herself and my daughter is shopping for herself, and so I decided if they had me carrying their stuff, they could buy more so that would be bad," shopper Mike Gleen said.

This year, shoppers who procrastinated say it's paying off.

"I think the retailers are trying to get what they can and you know whatever's left then they'll mark down," shopper Valeria Banks said.

Many of the larger retail chains are not waiting until after Christmas to have their after-Christmas sales. The most popular purchases appear to be clothes and shoes.

"I went to Champs and to Foot Locker and had very good deals at both of them," shopper Tamara Cooper said.

Shoppers say by waiting, they saved 50 percent or more.

"I've noticed that, it is a little earlier this year usually you have to wait until the day after Christmas to get the 40-50-60% off," Cooper said.

But that doesn't mean it can't get better. When it comes to clothing in particular, most of the items that are half-off Monday will go on clearance after Christmas. That has shoppers who were out browsing for bargains on Monday planning another trip on Thursday.
