Boy, 4, saves family from overnight fire in southwest Houston

HOUSTON

The Houston Fire Department got the call around 3am at an apartment complex off South Dairy Ashford and Huntington Estates Drive. When they arrived, they found everyone inside the apartment had made it out safely.

By the time they knocked the flames down, one apartment was destroyed and three others had smoke and water damage.

Rolanda Gray says her four-year-old son, Jameel, had gotten up to wait for his father to come home from work and heard the smoke detectors going off.

"I was asleep and he was up," she said. "And he came running in my room screaming, 'Momma, momma, momma,' and I popped up and then he led me in there."

Everyone managed to get out safely. Gray says her son might have saved her life. Red Cross is providing the family with some assistance, including toiletries and a place to stay for the next three days.

At this point, we don't know the cause of the fire.
