Shoplifting suspect accused of causing deadly wreck arrested

PASADENA, TX

Police say Robby Jo Hovis, 28, had shoplifted several items from a Walmart on Fairmont Parkway just after 1am Sunday. She allegedly stole several items, including a Hello Kitty purse, with a total value of less than $50.

Hovis reportedly ran from authorities in a white 2002 Ford F-150 pickup, and ran the red light at the intersection of Fairmont Parkway and Nations. The pickup slammed into a car with Anita Benton and her 14-year-old daughter inside. Benton, 50, died at the scene.

The teenager and Hovis were both taken to the hospital by Life Flight. The girl's injuries are said to be non-life threatening. Hovis was treated at the hospital and released Sunday afternoon.

Police say officers at the scene detected evidence of alcohol on Hovis, and once at the hospital, a blood draw determined her blood alcohol content to be .175, which is more than twice the legal limit for drivers.

Hovis has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
