Ex school board member gets prison for bribes

EL PASO, TX

The U.S. Attorney's office said that U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo sentenced former El Paso Independent School District Trustee Salvador "Sal" Mena on Monday. The judge also ordered Mena to forfeit $176,455.

Mena had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and deprivation of honest services. Mena accepted bribes from school district vendors in exchange for his support of their contracts. Mena told vendors to make contributions to his election campaigns.

The federal investigation into the school district has resulted in 39 convictions.
