Ex-financial adviser in El Paso gets 2 years in prison for part in bribery scheme

EL PASO, TX

A former city official received probation.

Former Bear Stearns employee Roberto "Bobby" Ruiz had pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme to bribe El Paso County Judge Anthony Cobos, the county's top official, to steer a $40 million county debt refinancing to him.

For his part, former El Paso City Council member Raymond R. Telles was placed on five years of probation.

Local businessman Lorenzo Hilario Aguilar, who used his connections to influence Cobos, will be sentenced on Dec. 12. Local lobbyist Antonio Dill learns his punishment Jan. 8.

Cobos, who also has pleaded guilty, is to be sentenced on Dec. 9.
