Police: 16-year-old injured in drive-by shooting in far east Houston

HOUSTON

Greenwood Park in the 600 block of Beresford Street is a popular place to play basketball on Sunday afternoons.

"Everybody comes over here," park patron Andrew Hyacinch said.

But from the basketball court to the playground, many visitors were unaware of what happened there overnight.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was shot in the lower back during a drive-by shooting around 9:15pm Saturday. Those who frequent the park said they've never seen violence on this level.

"A couple of fights but not a shooting, but I'm not surprised," Hyacinch said.

Houston police said the suspects were gone by the time officers arrived. Even after daylight came and things calmed down, the news had many park visitors on guard.

"I decided to take the kids out to the park on a Sunday, and when I heard about this, it's time to go," Jessica Brown said.

The teen's condition is unknown, but we're told the injuries were not life-threatening. No additional details have been released. The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call HPD or Crime Stoppers.
