Michael Mares, who's now 51, was a police officer in the small East Texas town of Onalaska. That changed when he and 24 others were swept up in a federal indictment of Texas Mexican Mafia prison gang of members and associates.
According to court documents, Mares agreed to sell a firearm, police T-shirts and police strobe lights to a confidential FBI source in August 2011 for $1,000. The source told Mares that he was a convicted felon who planned to invade the home of a drug trafficker by impersonating a police officer.
Onalaska is a town of about 1,800 residents about 75 miles north of Houston.
