New reward offered for information in deadly Subway robbery

HOUSTON

The victim's family and community activists held a news conference Thursday announcing the new reward for information into this violent robbery and murder. The reward is reportedly being offered by a former Houston Rockets player. Police say they could definitely use some leads into the two suspects in this case.

The chairs are empty and it's dark inside the Subway restaurant on Martin Luther King and South Loop. A deputy constable told me the sandwich shop's owner and workers closed up early, still shaken up over the violent robbery and murder that happened in the store on Tuesday.

"My brother really didn't deserve this," said LaFreda McGrew, the victim's sister. "He was a quiet person, he didn't bother anyone."

LaFreda's brother Christopher was a regular customer, and the victim killed during that robbery. His grieving family gathered with several community activists outside the Subway Thursday afternoon, pleading for answers about the gunmen who got away.

"I miss him," said his mother, Sammie McGrew. "I hope (the killer) turns himself in."

Activists announced outrage over the McGrew's murder at Subway and similar violent robberies targeting fast food establishments got the attention of a philanthropist and former Houston Rockets player who is reportedly offering an additional reward for information leading to an arrest.

"Steve Francis is going to add additional money to the existing Crime Stoppers reward," said community activist Quanell X. "He is going to add several thousand dollars to that reward."

This group and McGrew's family are also begging members of the community to abandon the so-called "no snitch policy" or practice of keeping silent about tips that could help police catch the criminals.

LaFreda said, "We just want closure, that's it. We just want these people off the streets before someone else gets hurt."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
