Texas City police say an autopsy has been ordered on 31-year-old Richard Lee Thompson Jr.
Police Chief Robert Burby says Thompson was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken to jail on charges of failing to maintain financial responsibility on an automobile and not having a driver's license.
The Galveston County Daily News reported Wednesday that police also confiscated a small amount of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Jailers found Thompson unconscious about seven hours after his arrest. Thompson was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
