A boy who used matches to try to get rid of an ant hill Sunday set a fire that left him with critical burns.

It happened just before 11am at a home in the 300 block of County Road 4704 near Dayton in Liberty County.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, the 12-year-old boy took a gas can and some matches and tried to burn an ant hill that was forming on the side of his home. The flames jumped from the ant hill to the gas can, setting the boy on fire.

Life Flight took the child to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition with second- and third-degree burns on more than 80 percent of his body.
