At about 9:30pm Thursday, police say a woman was leaving church on Harrisburg at Forest Hill when she spotted a toddler walking on Capitol, about to cross a four-lane street. The woman grabbed the child and took the toddler to the church.
Some of the church members began knocking on nearby doors, trying to find the child's mother, but with no success. At that point, they called the police.
HPD officers expanded the door to door search. About a block away they spotted a multi-family home with a door ajar. The mother answered the door but told police her child was asleep.
After a quick check of the toddler's bed, the mother discovered her child was indeed missing. Police say the child's aunt had been babysitting while the mother was out. After the mother returned, police believe the aunt left the door ajar on her way out. They think the toddler got out of bed and slipped out of the house.
HPD says the child was never abandoned, so no charges will be filed. Officers did notify CPS of the situation.
