Dallas Fire-Rescue has identified the victim as 41-year-old Lt. Todd Krodle.
Authorities say Krodle, who'd been with the department since September 1993, fell Sunday afternoon while fighting an apartment complex blaze. He was pronounced dead at a Dallas hospital.
Investigators say no residents were hurt in the fire, which was blamed on an electrical malfunction in a first-floor unit of the two-story complex.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says Krodle was a brave man who died doing the dangerous job he loved.
Krodle leaves behind a wife and two children.
