Some free meals dropped by Corpus Christi charity

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

Corpus Christi Metro Ministries says cutbacks in the Loaves & Fishes free cafeteria will start next Monday. The organization will also discontinue holiday meals.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports the ministry operates the city's oldest, largest such kitchen to benefit the homeless, the poor, the disabled and the elderly.

Executive director Rosa Pizzi says the operation is funded by donations and the organization has come up $500,000 short. She says the program, which serves more than 12,000 meals per month, started seeing a decline when fuel prices began to climb in 2008.
