Twenty-nine Houston public works employees have been suspended over allegations they stole scrap metal.

As we first told you last Friday, the workers are accused of pocketing brass and copper from repaired fire hydrants or water meters and selling the metal to scrap yards for personal profit.

The employees have been relieved of duty with pay until the investigation is complete.

Mayor Annise Parker has asked city's public safety committee to examine the department's oversight.
