Ten days ago, Baby Nicholas was left on a doorstep of a home in 2900 block of Ohio Avenue in Dickinson. The newborn shivered in the cold for nearly four hours until he was found.
He was rushed to the hospital where doctors found he had a hole in his lung, as well as being severely cold and he was listed in critical condition. Now Baby Nicholas is seven pounds and nine ounces. Doctors say the blond-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned baby is perfectly healthy.
But Galveston County Sheriff's deputies and doctors are still looking for the baby's mother. They say they're not looking at her as a criminal, because they say she may not even be the person who abandoned the child. What they want to do is find her, talk to her and get her some medical help. Doctors say this baby's delivery was a very difficult one and they're concerned about the mother's health, namely the possibilities of postpartum depression and severe infection.
Aside from the concerns for his mother, everyone says Baby Nicholas is lucky to be alive.
"He's truly a Christmas miracle," said Major Ray Tuttoilmondo with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office. "Had he stayed out on that porch much longer, we probably would be talking about who was Baby Nicholas. But we can, and we're glad to hear that we can, talk about who is he."
Baby Nicholas was found wrapped in a fleece blanket depicting a remote control when he was abandoned, along with a Christmas blanket inside a nylon fishing tackle bag. Deputies are hoping anyone who recognizes it or retailers who sold it may provide some clues for this investigation.
Baby Nicholas may be released from the hospital as early as next week. There's been a huge outpouring of support from the community, as donations have rolled in for the infant.
