A poll, conducted Oct. 22-27 and involving 673 likely voters, found that GOP Gov. Rick Perry was leading Democrat Bill White 49 percent to 37 percent.
White had appearances scheduled Friday in San Antonio, Austin and Fort Worth. Perry planned to be in Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland and El Paso.
The poll was conducted for The Dallas Morning News, the Houston Chronicle, the San Antonio Express-News, the Austin American-Statesman and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It was done by Blum & Weprin Associates Inc. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
