Rice U. timberland in La. now a woodpecker haven
NEW ORLEANS, LA
It says Rice-Land Lumber Co. agreed to manage 219 acres in
Beauregard Parish as nesting and foraging habitat for one family
group of woodpeckers, which live in open pine forests greater than
60 years old.
The agency says it now has 15 landowners and 481,300 acres in
the safe harbor program, with land managed for 101 family groups of
woodpeckers and two larger groups.
Rice will celebrate its centennial next year. It owns timberland
in Allen, Beauregard, Evangeline and Rapides parishes; 50,000 acres
in Beauregard Parish made up much of the bequest which created the
university.
