Witnesses told officials an 84-year-old man and his 79-year-old wife pulled up to the front of the East Texas Eye Center. As he attempted to park in front of the building, he hit the gas instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to strike the outside wall pushing it into the waiting room of the clinic.
An 80-year-old woman sitting on the end was reportedly virtually launched out of her chair and across the room into the reception desk. She was transported by Life Flight to Hermann Hospital in Houston in critical condition with a head injury.
Another woman and a man were transported in stable condition to Cleveland Hospital just blocks away. The driver of the vehicle was also transported.
Damage to the building was extensive. Several other people were lucky to escape, including a mother and child.
