Destruction of historic building could be halted

HOUSTON Current law only mandates a 90-day waiting period before buildings in historic areas can be razed. There are only 14 historic areas in the City of Houston. City council will decide today whether to halt all demolition of historic buildings until the end of the year. Preservationists say there are lots of older areas of Houston that are still intact.

"The neighborhoods have been overlooked and that is going to change because they are right adjacent to downtown. And so the time to protect them is now before a lot of development is moving in and you're fighting every time a property comes down," said David Bush with the Houston Preservation Alliance.

A mayor's task force is currently working on a permanent preservation policy.
