The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday that Sheri Lynn Davis, who was fired Monday as a science teacher at Jamie's House Charter School, was not required to be certified.
Texas law requires charter schools to hire certified teachers only in areas of bilingual and special education.
Texas Education Agency spokeswoman Debbie Ratcliffe says any punishment would have to come through the courts. The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating the April beating.
State Rep. Scott Hochberg of Houston is suggesting all charter school teachers be certified.
