Terrence Fletcher was jailed on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with bail set at $75,000. Fletcher, 33, arrested June 13, was held without bail on a federal parole violation charge.
Police say the charge against Fletcher could be upgraded since Vega's death.
A Bexar County Detention Center clerk told The Associated Press that Fletcher was in the La Salle County Jail, due to overcrowding at the lockup in San Antonio.
An attorney for Fletcher did not immediately comment.
