Police shoot armed man in emergency room

OLYMPIA, WA Police in Olympia say the incident occurred at Providence St. Peter Hospital. The Olympian newspaper reports that officers responded to a 911 call early Saturday from hospital staff dealing with an unruly patient.

Police confiscated two loaded handguns from the man, who had been brought to the hospital with a head injury.

Policy say the man became agitated when the staff prepared him for a medical test. When an officer on guard entered the treatment room, the man produced another gun. The two struggled and the officer fired one shot at the man.

The man, who was not identified, was treated for the gunshot wound but died. The officer, a 13-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
