Family attorney Randall Sorrels says the 44-year-old woman died after a staph infection in her left knee spread. Saavedra complained about severe leg pain and was taken to a jail clinic but never saw a doctor. The infection spread, and she died six days later.
The Justice Department investigated the jail in the summer of 2008 in response to requests for a review of its medical and sanitation conditions.
