HPD sergeant writes, directs play

HOUSTON An HPD police sergeant helped bring it all together, and performances are about to start at the Wortham Center.

It's a labor of love for Sheryl Jefferson.

"It's been a challenge but it has been fun as well," Jackson said.

She is putting the finishing touches on her play, "Left Back," which is partially based on the book series "Left Behind." On Thursday, Jefferson went through dress rehearsals with the cast and crew, getting ready for performances over the weekend.

"We wanted to just bring together the best talent we could," Jackson explained, "so we decided to reach out to other churches."

Jefferson wrote the play a few years ago. It deals with the Biblical Rapture and young adults when they're faced with decisions about God.

"Left Back" was first performed at the Holman Street Baptist Church, but Jefferson believed it should be brought to people around the city. So, other churches like Brentwood and Wheeler are helping out.

The actors say it's challenging.

"This calls for me to separate myself and play the role of a non-believer, so it has caused me to pray more and get more in the word," actress Ariel Davis of Windsor Village United Methodist Church said.

Some veterans of the play are coming back to do it again. They say it can be overwhelming but worth it.

"To come downtown and to have your whole city have the opportunity to come out and watch you and perform with something that is a Christian play, that's a great opportunity," actor Alvin Payne III said.

Jefferson says she has talked to old friends, and fellow officers have even chipped in to help build the sets. She says they're still learning as they go -- together.

"We just stepped out of our comfort zone to do something for God," she said.

The first show of "Left Back" is Friday night at the Wortham Center. There is also another performance on Saturday.
