Beach-goers flock to Galveston

GALVESTON, TX Despite some rain and overcast skies, the beach patrol was busy Sunday from East to West Beach and Stewart Beach.

On the Strand, workers say 70 to 80 percent of the businesses are back open after Hurricane Ike closed them last fall. Many visitors say they were happy to see progress on the island.

"It looks better than the first time I was here," said Galveston visitor Martin Salazar. "I am really surprised with the cleaning up they did."

"It's good to have our tourists back. It's good to have all of our lifeguards and police," added Galveston Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis. "It feels like things are kind of back to normal."

Workers at the East Beach entrance say more people came out this year than last Memorial Day weekend.
