Just before 5pm Wednesday, deputies with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's office were called to the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital in regards to a shooting that occurred in the emergency room. When deputies arrived on location, the hospital security guard handed over a small single shot handgun. It's the weapon James Derek Adair, 46, of Richmond, apparently used to shoot himself.
Adair is reported to have brought his family food while they were waiting for his wife to be discharged from the hospital. Shortly thereafter, hospital personnel heard what sounded like a gunshot that came from the room. When they entered the room, Adair was found lying on the floor suffering of a gunshot wound to the head.
Adair was treated for his injuries and then transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where he is currently on life support. Adair is the estranged grandson of "Red" Adair, the world-renowned oil well firefighter who died in 2004.
This incident is still an active and on-going investigation and you will be notified of any updates.
