Beware of hurricane scam

We have a consumer alert about a scam targeting hurricane victims. Insurance agents say some people are receiving official looking mail that says it's from the Texas Department of Insurance Agency.[SIGN UP: Get headlines and breaking news sent to you]

The letters say the person may be eligible to receive additional benefits from their insurance provider, and to call a number and give personal information. There is no state organization called the Texas Department of Insurance Agency. There is a Texas Department of Insurance, and it is not sending out any letters to hurricane victims.
