Mama dog and puppies saved from fire

No humans were home when Bryan firefighters entered a burning house and heard cries for help. Fire Chief Mike Donoho says firefighters Thursday rescued a dog and her seven puppies. A neighbor called firefighters, who arrived and saw a vehicle in the driveway.

Donoho says firefighters went into the house to see if anyone was home when they "heard a tremendous amount of whining and barking."

Firefighters located the dog and her seven "little lap puppies," which Donoho estimates are about a month old.

Donoho says firefighters resuscitated two puppies, cleaning their mouths and noses.

The dogs have been returned to the family. Names of the residents weren't immediately released.

Donoho says the fire was started by a toaster left on after the residents departed for school, daycare and work.
