Cy-Fair's Ogwumike gains national honor

Nneka Ogwumike has been named Gatorade national girls basketball player of the year after leading Cypress-Fairbanks to the state girls Class 5A title. The annual award recognizes athletic and academic excellence.

The 6-foot-2 senior forward was the named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship game after her 17-point, 17-rebound performance against DeSoto.

The McDonald's and Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American has signed to play collegiate basketball at Stanford.

Ogwumike is also her senior class president and 2007 homecoming queen. She has also raised money to assist children of the Darfur crisis in Sudan.

She is now a finalist for the Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year to be presented in July.
