Hit-and-run suspect arrested at IAH after allegedly killing bicyclist on Airtex Blvd, officials say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities arrested the woman accused of hitting and killing a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash on Airtex Boulevard, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.

The crash happened at about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday near Brundage Drive, just west of the North Freeway.

Authorities said they found surveillance footage that showed the bicyclist pulling out in front of the woman's dark-colored Cadillac.

"No brake lights before or after it, kind of sped up," Asst. Chief Toby Hecker said.

Pct. 4 identified Nyla Gamboa as the suspected driver, charged with failure to stop and render aid involving death.

In an update just before 6:30 p.m., Gamboa was arrested at Bush Intercontinental Airport attempting to board a flight out of state.

Hecker said there was nothing obstructing the woman's view from seeing the man, and it was light outside at the time of the crash.

The victim, who has only been described as a Black man believed to be in his 30s riding an electric bike, was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to authorities.

Deputies were able to track down the driver's SUV in the Timber Crossing subdivision, about a mile and a half from the crash scene.

The vehicle was still running but unattended at the intersection of Willow Briar Drive and Bayberry Meadows Lane.

Hecker said they were able to use a K-9 officer to track the driver's scent to a cul-de-sac. There, they found a video showing Gamboa getting into another vehicle and leaving.

"We were able to get some video from some cameras in the area of her actually getting out of the car and running," Hecker said.

Photos of the car taken by the constable's office show significant front-end damage to the woman's car and a shredded front driver's side tire.

Hecker said the individual who picked the driver up could face charges if they are identified.

Hecker said they found illegal narcotics in the vehicle during a search.

"The majority of the time when you get in a wreck, it's called an accident for a reason," Hecker explained. "You might get a ticket. You might get a citation because you ran a red light, you did something. When you leave, you're looking at an actual crime that can affect you for the rest of your life."

Gamboa appeared in court early Thursday morning.

In court, we learned she works full time as a valet at a hotel and was previously an Amazon delivery driver.

Her bond was set at $40,000.
