Courageous Conversation event spurs emotional debate about race, policing

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Raw emotions filled the Kingdom Builders' Center today on Houston's southwest side. Congressman Al Green led what he called a "courageous conversation" about race and policing.

"We're tired. What do we have to do?" asked one woman in tears. "We don't see any accountability and now we're tired and we're mad."

Hundreds turned out for the forum, where community members asked law enforcement about policy matters. Representatives from the Houston Police Department and Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson said there needs to be a better dialogue.

"I'd give my life for you and I don't even know you," said Jacob Webb with the African American Police Officers League. "So for you to say that all officers are bad or all officers aren't being accountable ... every day, I put on my uniform. I will die for you or anyone else in this room because I took an oath. Not only with the police department, but with God, so for me this is not some job. It's a calling."

Organizers planned the forum in response to recent police shootings across the nation.
