A dog who detects explosives for the U.S. Coast Guard is set to retire after nine years of service.

A retirement ceremony is set for Monday morning in Galveston for Ferro, a Belgian Malinois.

Petty Officer 1st Class Shane Coleman has been Ferro's handler for the dog's entire career. After the retirement, Ferro will be adopted by Coleman and his wife.

Lt. Cmdr. Chad Holm, the commanding officer of Galveston's Maritime Safety and Security Team, says the partnership between Coleman and Ferro is an example of using "traditional capabilities to effectively combat modern security threats in our nation's ports."
