It's Free Stuff Friday! There's not only a back to school festival, but there are some free activities your kids can enjoy before returning to school.

If your kids love "Shrek," then they will love Lowe's free workshop this weekend. The free event is this 10am Saturday and 2pm Sunday. Kids will be able to build a model of dragon from the movie "Shrek." Go online to register and find your participating location.

If you have a young imaginative author in your house, this Saturday at Discovery Green, the Young Writers Workshop will be taking place from 10:30-11:30am. Kids will get hands-on tips and instructions from experienced writers. The event is free.

Don't have any evening plans this weekend? Then venture to the Miller Outdoor Theatre for the Houston Shakespeare Festival. Saturday is the ghostly tale of "Hamlet" and Sunday will have double trouble with the twins of Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors." Both shows are at 8:30pm, and seating as always is free.

If your garden is looking a little drab, August is a great time to rejuvenate your summer lawn or patio with colorful container gardens. The folks at Cornelius Nursery can help with a free gardening clinic this Saturday, August 11 at 10:15am. Drop on by to learn basic design from the gardening pros. Then save the date for next Wednesday, August 15 at 9:30am. There will be a kids clinic all about butterflies. The butterfly clinic is free to those who register online. The first 50 children will receive a butterfly guide. There are two Cornelius Nursery locations.

Start the new school year off right! Saturday is the big Back to School Fest at Reliant Center from 8am until noon. There will be a lot going on, but the highlights include free school supplies, free school uniforms, free health screenings and free immunizations. The event will service school age students. Students must be present with their guardian to receive school supplies, uniforms and immunizations. Supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Please note attendees will not be allowed to stage or camp out the day before the event.

Finally, Saturday is National Bowling Day. Bowl a game for free at participating locations.
