While the nation's top athletes are going for gold in the Olympics, more than two dozen children competed in the ACHIEVE Houston triathlon on Saturday.

The triathlon was held at the Stella Link YMCA.

Officials said 34 inner-city children ages 9-14 competed in a 100-meter swim, followed by a 5-K bike race and a 2-K run.

This was a first-ever competitive event for many of the children. They trained for six weeks at a free camp under Dr. Charles Moser, a local dentist and triathlete who organized the race.

ACHIEVE was founded in Washington D.C. in 2007 and came to Houston in 2008. For more information, visit achievekidstri.org.
