Child driver crashes truck, hits woman

HOUSTON

It happened around 1pm on Garsee Drive near the Woodland Oaks subdivision of northwest Houston.

According to police, the boy wanted to go to the store and his mother wouldn't let him, so he stole her 1999 Chevrolet Silverado.

He was driving the pickup when he lost control and drove through a fence and into a back yard, taking down a tree and knocking a woman to the ground as it came to a stop.

The victim, identified by family members as Elia Ortiz, was transported to Northwest Memorial Hermann Hospital with minor injuries and was later released.

The woman's eight-year-old daughter was also in the yard at the time of the crash and saw the whole thing happen.

"When the truck came here, then I was like behind the truck, and I saw my mom. She was on the floor crying," she said.

Ortiz's husband, Victor Mazariegos, tells us he's just happy his wife and young daughter are alive.

"The truck was coming right here and my little daughter went that way and the truck all the way over there," he said.

He was able to get his fence repaired Saturday evening in time for his wife's arrival home from the hospital.

The 12-year-old driver was taken into police custody and later released to his mother. Officials said no charges were filed.

Besides damage to the fence and plants, bricks on the home were knocked loose when the truck ran into a pile of wood that was stacked against the house.
