Forged checks used to give Houston Zoo $50,000 donation

HOUSTON

Robert Richard Wickboldt, 35, is charged with forgery. A director at the Houston Zoo told the Harris County District Attorney's Office that on February 3 Wickboldt gave her a check for $50,000 and was subsequently invited to a gala for donors. At the benefit, Wickboldt wrote two more checks for a total more than $5,000.

The zoo director later learned that all three checks were written on bad accounts and notified authorities. A bank official stated that the checks were forgeries. The bank routing number and account number were both incorrect.

The zoo director picked Wickboldt out of a photo lineup. Bail in the case has been set at $100,000.
