US movies headline Venice Film Festival

Roman Polanski, David Cronenberg and 5 American directors, including George Clooney and Abel Ferrara, will compete at this year's Venice Film Festival.

Organizers said Thursday that all 22 movies competing for the Golden Lion are world premieres.

Madonna and Al Pacino will present their feature films out of competition during the Aug. 31-Sept. 10 festival. Also out of competition is Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion," a virus thriller with an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Todd Solondz of "Happiness" fame; William Friedkin, the veteran director whose credits include "The Exorcist"; and Ami Canaan Mann are the other American directors in competition.
