No public fireworks show in Austin due to drought

AUSTIN, TX The Austin Fire Department has decided not to approve any permits for public fireworks shows because of the hot, dry and windy conditions.

Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr on Thursday said she knows that people want to see Independence Day fireworks shows, but officials just can't take that chance when it's so dry.

The Austin Symphony sponsors the fireworks. Spokesman Don Hill says the group could seek a permit if the area soon gets a significant amount of rain.

The Texas Forest Service says, as of Friday, 197 of the state's 254 counties have bans on outdoor burning.
