Boyfriend arrested in teen's accidental shooting

HOUSTON

The 16-year-old boy has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and was referred to the Harris County Juvenile Probation, according to a Houston Police Department statement. Eyewitness News isn't releasing the name of the boyfriend because he is a minor.

Waddieonne Griffin, 16, was shot on Friday in the left arm, but the bullet went through into the left side of her chest. She was pronounced dead at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Detectives say witnesses initially claimed the girl was killed in a drive-by shooting while she was standing outside her boyfriend's home.

Later, investigators discovered the boyfriend had a pistol which was brought to his home by a friend. Griffin asked her boyfriend to hand over the gun because she didn't want anyone to get hurt. Her boyfriend complied, but as he tried to disengage the hammer to a non-firing position, it slipped and discharged.

Detectives say Griffin's boyfriend confessed to the circumstances of the incident and was taken into custody without incident on Monday.
