Free entertainment, haircuts, classes and more

A free pizza for donating a backpack, and a free haircut for back to school -- it's all part of this Free Stuff Friday. And for those who love scrapbooking, there are several free classes to help you get started. But first, save the date for next weekend for free fun in the theater district.

The Capital Bank Theater District open house will be on Sunday, August 29, starting at noon. This free event allows you to experience dance, music and theater at the Alley Theatre, the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, the Wortham Theater Center and Jones Hall. You'll be able to go from venue to venue by riding the Capital One Bank trolleys to watch the performances. The schedule for that is located on the downtown Houston website and the open house event will end with a free Houston Symphony concert at 4pm at Jones Hall.

The Tasting Room and Max's Wine Dive are having a back to school drive for backpacks. When you donate a new backpack to the Tasting Room, you will get a free pizza. Or if you drop off your backpack at Max's Wine Dive, you will get a free happy hour appetizer. The backpack drive ends September 15th.

Head over to the Miller Outdoor Theatre this Saturday because it's a Tribute to the Big Band Era! The event starts at 8pm and is produced by the Conrad Johnson Music and Fine Arts Foundation. The music will feature Bach's inventions as well as the original works by Conrad O. Johnson and some other big band greats, like Glen Miller and Duke Ellington.

If you're interested in scrapbooking, Archiver's, the photo memory store, offers several free classes and demos. Between 10am and 9pm Friday and Saturday, they are offering coloring and stamping demos, and again on Sunday from 11am to 6pm. They also have scrapbooking basics classes and this Tuesday's class from 6pm to 8pm is in Spanish. For a complete schedule of the store's events, go to the Archiver's website.

You still have one day to take advantage of Remington College's free haircuts for kids program. Saturday is the last day for kids 17 and under to get a free haircut and style. Also, parents get services discounted 50 percent off. Only two Remington College locations are offering the free haircuts Saturday -- the southeast location off the Gulf Freeway in Webster and a north Houston location off the North Freeway in the Greenspoint area. No appointment is necessary.
