The shooting happened on Hollister near West Tidwell around 5pm this afternoon.

Investigators said that three armed men kicked in the door of the apartment Wednesday evening. They said the suspects went into the home demanding a safe. They also said the suspects held an adult female on the first floor at gunpoint, when at least one suspect went upstairs and grabbed the safe.

The suspect then shot the stepfather. The 56-year-old man was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he later died.

"The safe was on the second floor and they threw the safe over the balcony. They took it outside. We have no idea what the contents of the safe were," said Sgt. Phillip Munoz of HPD Homicide.

Investigators are still interviewing relatives. They told us that the safe actually belonged to the victim's stepson, who was not home at the time of the incident. They will be talking to the son for the investigation.

Authorities told us they have a description of the suspects, but no description of a getaway car.
