Two killed in utility pole crash

Matthew Urdiales, 21, and Chelsie Agharaad, 21, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 2400 block of W. Parkwood Avenue. Witnesses told police that the 2002 Dodge Intrepid driven by Matthew Urdiales was traveling approximately 50 miles per hour westbound on W. Parkwood Avenue when the vehicle suddenly swerved to the right and collided head-on with a utility pole. The speed limit at the scene of the crash is 45 mph.

A rear passenger in the vehicle, Richard Urdiales, 30, of Dickinson was taken by PHI air ambulance to the Texas Medical Center. He is in critical condition. Relatives told police that the two men were cousins.

Police believe that alcohol and drugs may have been contributing factors to the crash. Police recovered several hydrocodone tablets from the vehicle that were not contained in a prescription bottle and reported the odor of an alcoholic beverage in the vehicle.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt. Police report that the two passengers were not wearing their seatbelts.
