The initial report, taken by the Galveston Beach Patrol at approximately 3:15pm, was that a man, a woman and a child had swum too far out and had to struggle to make it back to shore. The woman and the child were able to make it back to the beach safely but they lost sight of the 27-year-old man. They had been swimming off the seawall near 55th Street.
Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received the report at approximately 4pm and dispatched an MH65-C rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Houston and a 47-foot motor-life-boat crew from Station Galveston.
Search and rescue coordinators at Sector Houston-Galveston said they plan to keep the helicopter crew on scene until sunset. The life-boat crew is battling rough seas and will continue searching until the situation becomes hazardous to the crew.
The search will resume at first-light tomorrow if the man is not located tonight.
