Athlete drowns during triathlon

THE WOODLANDS, TX The competition was going on at Lake Woodlands Saturday morning in Montgomery County. The conditions were ideal for a sporting event. It happened at Northshore Park during the first phase of the triathlon, a 500-meter swim.

According to officials, about 900 athletes were competing. There were about 18 lifeguards stationed in kayaks in the water and along the waterfront. We're told the man was showing signs of distress in the water. Lifeguards pulled him from the water.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital. He was pronounced dead at about 9:30am.

Officials are not releasing the name or age of the victim, only that it was a man.

The event was sanctioned by the US Triathlon Association. This is the fifth year this event has been held.
