Foggy mornings ahead until midweek cold front arrives

Houston Weather: Scattered showers continue, dense fog returns by Saturday night
Scattered showers will continue through Saturday, especially northwest of Houston. Dense Fog will return overnight.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A warm and somewhat muggy airmass is in place this weekend, leading to well above average temperatures area-wide with scattered showers possible at any point in the day.

Sea fog is also building near the coast, and that fog will become widespread overnight as moisture levels continue to rise and keep temperatures in the mid 60s. The fog could be dense, so keep that in mind if you have travel plans overnight or Sunday morning. Once the fog lifts Sunday, the sun will come out and warm temperatures close to 80 degrees. There is only a 20% chance you'll encounter a rain shower, and most will stay dry.

What are rain chances looking like for the rest of the week?

It's looking more and more like the Pacific storms crossing the country this week will move farther north of us than originally expected, so we've lowered rain chances to 20% for Monday and Tuesday as the front with that system likely won't get close enough to impact us much. We still have a 40% chance of rain on Wednesday when the next cold front arrives. This will clear out the clouds moisture, leaving us cool, sunny, and dry for the rest of the week.

How cold will it get behind Wednesday's cold front?

We are expecting seasonal temperatures with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Now that it looks like the coldest air will miss us just to the east, there is only a small chance some could dip into the 30s, and a freeze looks unlikely at this time.

What's the early outlook for Christmas Day?

It's still too early to get specific, but the general idea is that temperatures should bounce back from the cold conditions behind our midweek cold front. At this time we anticipate morning lows in the 50s and daytime highs in the 70s with a partly cloudy sky bringing only a low chance for showers.

When could we get our first freeze in Houston?

While many communities outside of Houston just got a light freeze, Houston missed out. We see no signs of freezing temperatures over the next 10 days in Southeast Texas. Long range projections indicate we'll have to wait until the first half of January for a decent chance of a freeze in Houston. On average, Houston's first freeze occurs during the second week of December.
